General dentistry includes several key areas of treatment.

Preventative dentistry involves the use of individually tailored home care for patients as this is the key to maintaining good teeth and gums for life. The reality is that 70 per cent of all dental disease is preventable.

Restorative dentistry relates to teeth fillings. In the event that there is some decay associated with one or more teeth, dentists at the practice will help solve the problems using minimum intervention. This may include the use of a rubber dam and the careful removal of the diseased tooth structure.  The remaining tooth structure is then reinforced. Composite resin based materials are used to enhance the natural appearance of the tooth and also maintain its structural integrity.  It is best to leave as much of the tooth as possible to assist with its long term stability. Significantly, dental decay is one of the most prevalent bacterial diseases in the modern world.

Gingivitis and periodontal disease require varying treatments. Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums and is very easily treated in the dental chair and supported with good home care.  This infection can be controlled. It is often associated with bleeding and/or sore gums. Periodontal disease or jaw bone disease, on the other hand, is prevalent in about 20 per cent of the Australian population.  It is an infection of the gums, bones and the entire structure surrounding the teeth. This often silent problem has links with a multitude of medical issues including diabetes and heart disease. Periodontal disease requires careful diagnosis and ongoing treatment to keep it under control.

Cracked teeth are one of the most common issues for patients over the age of 40. In many instances such teeth are associated with the presence of old amalgam fillings. The expansion and contraction of these fillings and the associated long term use of these weakened teeth can lead to cracks on the surrounding tooth structure. If the cracks are detected early, they can be treated using fillings or crowns. If untreated, the cracks can develop splinters under the gums. Early diagnosis using a range of techniques can help address these problems.

Crowns and bridges are used to stabilize teeth significantly weakened by old restorations, grinding and clenching, and cracks.  Often the only way to stabilize these impacted teeth is by using a crown. This is similar to a crash helmet in that it fits over the top of the existing tooth and fillings to provide protection under normal usage. Two or more crowns can be joined together to form a bridge which can help if there are missing or weak teeth.

Root canal treatment is used if decay or cracks have compromised a tooth’s nerve and blood supply.  This can lead to the tooth ‘dying’. There is only significant pain if an abscess forms. However, if diagnosed early, modern dentistry can help treat these areas with little or no discomfort. This procedure involves the careful removal of the dead and dying structure in the roots of the tooth and replacing this with rubber based materials. The long term success rate of this procedure is approximately 90 per cent.
